Work at World Trade Center stops when steel beams fall

Posted on Friday, February 17th, 2012 at 6:17 pm

Yesterday, construction was stopped at the World Trade Center construction site in Manhattan because several steel beams were dropped from a crane at the site. The accident occurred at around 10 a.m. at the site of the future 72-story building.

The steal beams were being lifted by a crane about 40-stories high on the tower’s south side when a cable supporting the beams broke. Beams fell onto a truck at the site that had delivered them. No debris left the construction site, and nearby work and the 9/11 Memorial stayed opened after the accident.

Fortunately, no one was injured in this accident. However, accidents at construction sites can be very dangerous and potentially fatal. A new study has just been released by the Center for Construction Research and Training regarding the risk of dying on the job.

The study found that individuals who are employed in the construction industry are five times more likely to suffer a fatal injury on the job than any other profession. The author of the study noted that people in the construction industry account for six percent to eight percent of the workforce, but 20 percent of work-related deaths.

Other findings indicated that falls at work are the most common form of injuries and deaths related to construction accidents. The second leading cause of deaths in the construction field deals with transportation accidents.

Posted on Wednesday, November 17th, 2010 at 10:30 am

The family of an 84-year-old nursing home resident has claimed that their loved one was assaulted while in the care of a nursing home staff member.

The man’s health was declining and he suffered from dementia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease which is why the family had to make the difficult decision to put the man into a nursing home so the he could be supervised at all times.

The nursing home allegedly called the family to tell them that their father needed to be taken to the hospital to be looked at after he had been hit. The  nursing home later changed their story to say that he was lightly tapped and not hit.

The family says that the marks on their father show that he was hit because there is distinct markings on his back. The person accused of hitting their father has been fired, but they are still pushing for an investigation into the facility.
