Iowa Legislators Move to Curb Elder Abuse

Posted on Wednesday, December 9th, 2009 at 9:39 am

Iowa legislators have approved new regulations meant to reduce nursing home abuse, a problem that has reached seemingly epidemic-level proportions in the Midwest and perhaps beyond. If a senior citizen in your family has been the victim of nursing home abuse, the eldercare abuse lawyers of Levinson Axelrod may be able to help you fight for their dignity.

The panel of legislators increased the number of healthcare workers who are required by law to report abuse to include food service workers and housekeeping. Additionally, the legislators defined “gross negligence” as abuse. Lobbyists for the hospital and nursing home industries argued that passage of these rules would define too many as abusive, but were ultimately unable to prevent the new rule change.
