The Governor of Kentucky has created a task force that will review nursing home abuse cases in the state.

One of the first steps of the task force will be a look into how the government handles reports of nursing home abuse and neglect. A previous report was sent to the local newspaper and stated that there were 107 Class A citations claiming that a resident was in harm of becoming injured or worse.

Seven of the cases were prosecuted at the state level. Eight of them were under review from the prosecutor or attorney general, but the average pending time for a case was 19 months.

A nursing home abuse lawsuit over the death of an elderly woman has ended with a jury in Polk County awarding the family $114 million.

The case is about a 76-year-old woman that was placed in a nursing home in Florida in March 2003 for rehabilitation. The woman fell twice within the first two weeks of admittance and suffered head trauma and an injured upper arm because of it.

The lawsuit claims that these falls were caused by the staff not putting in the appropriate measures to protect the residents. The woman was then moved from the home after being malnourished and she had multiple bed sores. She died in July 2003.

Nursing home abuse can happen to the most vulnerable people, our thoughts are with family and friends of the victim.

The class-action suit represented almost 32,000 residents who were getting negligent care from nursing home that are owned by Skilled HealthCare. The settlement was determined by the amount of hours that the state law requires each resident to receive in care each day. According to records, the nursing homes in this chain were much below this number for over five years.

A nursing home in Sacramento County, California has been ordered by a judge to pay $29.1 million in a lawsuit over nursing home abuse.

The suit stemmed from the death of 79-year-old tenant. The woman had mild dementia and she moved into the nursing home in March 2005. During her stay, the woman allegedly broke her hip in a fall and the injury went undiagnosed. Within days of the incident, the woman died of an infected bed sore.

According to information provided, jurors found the nursing home guilty of elder abuse. The nursing home disputed the charges and the results because they said the decision was based upon emotion and not facts.

Nursing home abuse is a difficult situation for elderly people and their families. Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the victim in the case.
