A resident at a nursing home in Kentucky was allegedly sexually assaulted by a male resident at the nursing home and her family was not notified.

Now the facility’s administrator is facing charges from failing to report the incident. The incident occurred as a male resident allegedly trapped the woman in his room and the nursing staff later found the man’s penis was exposed.

Another incident occurred when the woman was sitting in the hallway and the man had ejaculated on her face. The victim is 88 years old and suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. The incident was never reported to the family and some information was not in the attorney general’s report.

Nursing home abuse is a serious issue that effects some of the most vulnerable people, our thoughts are with the friends and family of the victim.

The nursing home aide was suppose to use the assistance of another person before moving a resident in order to avoid injury. Earlier in the year, the nursing home was fined almost $100,000 for health violations from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

A nursing home abuse case has come to an end with a $667 million verdict against multiple nursing homes that are owned by Skilled HealthCare that is based out of California.

The class-action suit represented almost 32,000 residents who were getting negligent care from nursing home that are owned by Skilled HealthCare. The settlement was determined by the amount of hours that the state law requires each resident to receive in care each day. According to records, the nursing homes in this chain were much below this number for over five years.

Charges have been filed after a nursing home fire in 2008 killed several nursing home residents.

The fire began after a resident began smoking and suddenly became unconscious. The resident was unsupervised during the incident and the cigarette then began a fire that spread throughout the entire facility and killed three of the 120 residents.

Five of the employees at the nursing home are charged with elder abuse. Investigators found that the fire was not caught early because the fire alarms had been turned off and that this was negligence of people who do the upkeep of the building. This error gave the residents no warning of the fire that was spreading around them.

Elder abuse can have devastating effects on everyone involved, our thoughts are with the elderly victims in the accident.

A nursing home in Sacramento County, California has been ordered by a judge to pay $29.1 million in a lawsuit over nursing home abuse.

The suit stemmed from the death of 79-year-old tenant. The woman had mild dementia and she moved into the nursing home in March 2005. During her stay, the woman allegedly broke her hip in a fall and the injury went undiagnosed. Within days of the incident, the woman died of an infected bed sore.

According to information provided, jurors found the nursing home guilty of elder abuse. The nursing home disputed the charges and the results because they said the decision was based upon emotion and not facts.

Nursing home abuse is a difficult situation for elderly people and their families. Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the victim in the case.

The Illinois Attorney General’s office conducted a sweep this week at the Golden Moments Senior Care Center in Jacksonville, Illinois. This is the 11th sweep of a nursing home in the state in the last few months, in an effort to clean up the state’s less than stellar nursing home record.

The nursing home was one wherein both elderly patients and convicted felons are housed, a sadly common state of affairs. Five former sex offenders are housed in the Golden Moments Senior Care center, and the nursing home was targeted for failing to provide risk assessments to the state for three of those five offenders.

Earlier this year, the nursing home was fined $50,000 in connection with the death of a 74-year-old resident who choked on food despite staffers’ knowledge of that possibility given the patient’s history. In 2009, the home was fined $20,000 for failing to keep residents from being mentally, verbally, and physically abused. Staff members were found to be slapping and bullying residents.

Nursing homes with a history of abuse need to be held accountable for their inaction if they do not fix their problems.

On May 6, Illinois state lawmakers passed a nursing home reform bill, 118-0, that will increase the number of state checks on nursing homes as well create more strict safety guidelines.

“Far too often, nursing home residents are subjected to violence at the hands of other residents and abuse and neglect at the hands of those entrusted to care for them,” Attorney General Lisa Madigan said.

“It is the state’s obligation to address these failings and ensure that nursing homes provide safe and therapeutic environments for their residents,” she said.

“Nursing home residents and their families depend on the state to ensure that vulnerable adults are treated with care, compassion and dignity,” added Madigan.

The new mandated checks will be unannounced and random.
